For this task, I didn't go around begging for a camera but I had to beg someone to be my model. Thank god! My mum agreed :) But she wasn't informed that this pictures will be published on the web too. OH well... Ignorance is bliss ;p

So here are my 10 frames:

I wanted to achieve the "grainy" look for the pictures so the pictures above were edited using photoshop. The tools used were "Brightness and Contrast" and "Curves." I think I went overboard with the tools for some of the pictures.

Well... I hope you can figure out the story the pictures are trying to tell. Make a guess and write it in the comments.

Needful Things (The painful process of abstraction)

For this exercise, the image i chose to distill is that of JVC CD player at home and it is represented by Figure 1. As seen from below, Figure 2 is a close representation of the actual JVC CD player. In Figure 3, the JVC logo is removed. The stage in this abstraction process where the image lost its specific identity and communicates a generic meaning is shown at Figure 4. After that stage, Figure 5 and 6 could represent different things to different people. For instance, some people said that Figure 6 looks like an ipod.

The final symbol is actually Figure 4 from above. At a glance, people would look that the symbol represents a home CD player.

This is a rather hard assignment because just the process of choosing which image to distill gave me a huge headache.

Me, Myself and I (The Next Stage aka Stage 3)

After the considering the suggestions and feedback given by my tutorial mates, I edited my two selected roughs accordingly. For both roughs, I drew it out on paper first then scanned it into the computer. After which, I imported both roughs into Freehand.

"I Love Chocolate" Concept:
I included a small semi-melted cube of chocolate into the background. In order to get the semi-melted effect, I first drew the cube of chocolate using the line tool and followed by the transform tool. I decided to add in "bubbles" into my name to give it a glossy effect. The final result is shown below:

"I love Shopping!" Concept:
From the suggestions given last week, I combined two ideas from thumbnails into one - The shopping bag and things which you can buy from shopping

to form my name. The tools i used to come with the prototype found below were the pen tool and line tool.

Afterthoughts:
The main obstacle i came across during this stage was using Freehand to draw my concepts. This is my second attempt at using this application. The first time was during the lab.

On another note, I did not expect the roughs I scanned into the computer to turn up so "sketchy-looking." So it was a rather horrible experience trying to recreate it on the computer. But I am rather happy with the end result :)

These are the roughs I came up with based on the 2 selected concepts.

The following below are the roughs for "I love Chocolates" based on the chocolate fudge concept. I selected this concept because of the great deal of flexibility it offers. The feedback I got from this 2 roughs was "It does not look like chocolate."

The next 2 roughs is based on using shopping materials to form my name. My tutorial mates suggested that "I love Shopping" could be made more obvious by adding in shopping bags which I agree is true.

For this exercise, I have to design 8 thumbnail sketches of my name based two things I love or hate.

So I did on the two things I love...

The first four thumbnail sketches shows my unhealthy obsession with chocolates.

I hope you can tell what the four thumbnails sketches are showing. The first thumbnail sketch is actually my name printed on the thin slip of paper found with Hershey Kisses. The second sketch is my name as part of a chocolate bar's packaging. The third one is my name on "m&m" chocolates. The last thumbnail shows my name as hot fudge coming out of whatever that thing you call.

The next four thumbnail sketches shows my love for shopping.

The first thumbnail shows my name as part of a shopping bag. The second thumbnail, my name as part of a price tag. For my third and fourth thumbnail, the ideas are pretty similar. The third thumbnail uses materials which you can buy from shopping to form my name. For the fourth thumbnail, I used stuff related to shoes to design my name.

What is really difficult about this stage of the assignment is to come up with so many various thumbnail sketches based on one idea. Haha... That's why my sketches look pretty similar.
